In terms of Back-up, there is Deja Dup preinstalled. If you are referring to MintBackup, then that can be downloaded via the Software Centre or Package Manager.

I have dumped Mint for Pinguy OS. As suggested above, why not try as a Live CD first - you have nothing to lose but a lot to gain IMHO.
